My book is Called "Holler If You Hear Me" This book is about a man named Greg Michie who worked as a teacher in an inner city high school in Chicago. So far I really enjoy this book. I really liked how he described the events that happened inside his classroom but, not only did he talk about what happened in the classroom and talk about the kids in the class, he went into further depth. He had many section specifically about the kids in his class which I thought was great. It gave us a lot of inside information about the kids, why they act the way they do, and also lets the reader know them a little more personally. One thing that stuck out in my mind was about a young boy named Taveres. He was a gangbanger at the age of 12, he was also in charge of a lot of the other gang bangers. This was shocking to me but, as the story went on and as he got older he realized being in a gang was not what he wanted to do. He wanted to graduate high school and become something. This was difficult for him because he felt he was put in the "dumb class" or "bad class". Because of this Taveres thought he had to live up to those expectation, he had to act dumb or act like a trouble maker. When he confided in Mr. Michie he told him that that is not how he wants to be portrayed, he wants to do well and he wants his teachers to like him. I think this is very true when it comes to kids, teachers and peers sometimes classify certain kids as the dumb kids or bad kids but, the kids actually are earning to learn and be liked by their teachers. So far I really like the book and I am excited to read the next sections.
